Reflections On Digital Life

Facebook Follies

This week in BBT class we watched a documentary on people misusing social network sites.  In this documentary it had many different examples of how social media sites, such as Facebook were misused.  I found it very interesting how many different people were effected at one time or another by Facebook.  One example of something bad that happened was a robbery, but before the robber left the house he was robbing he took a picture of himself with the items he stole and posted it on the family's Facebook account.  The man was later caught and arrested.  I found it very interesting how some people post everything on the internet, no matter what it is, no matter what the cost.

Digital Life Quiz

Today in BBT class I completed a Digital Life Quiz.  After doing this quiz I realized that a lot of people misuse technology more often in this generation.  Something that surprised me in this quiz is that eighty five percent of parents talked to their children about online safety.  I didn't think many parents in this generation would care about what their children do online. Another thing that I found surprising and interesting is that four in ten students listen to music the most out of all other types of social media  activity.  I was sure that texting would be the right answer, because even kids have cellphones now a days.  I am on the internet most of the time, on sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram ect. But I think if you use them correctly it is alright. Compared to the quiz I think  I use the internet very safely, but very often. The thing I use most throughout the day is probably IMessage, Twitter, and Snapchat. The ones I don't use as much anymore is Facebook and Instagram. I think I use Twitter the most because i relate to a lot of tweets.

The Digital World

There are many up and down sides to living in a very complex digital world.  Some upsides to being  able to have the technology we have are; we can connect with family members far away, keep up to date on news and media, and to keep up your work and projects.  Some downsides to living in a digital world are; there isn't much privacy on the internet, many things can go wrong if you add technology to the situation, and since technology was made it just so happens that a lot of problems like bullying were happening a lot.  Using technology for me makes it easier to chat with friends, get homework I missed and finding out the most recent news.  I think technology wasn't a big help to society as much as it hurt people. Technology caused a lot of problems around bullying and society doesn't really pay attention to those problems.  But on the other hand I don't know what I or anybody else would do without technology. Because I use technology for everything, homework, social media, and to keep in touch with friends outside of school.

Digital Dummies?

In BBT class we watched a video called Digital Dummies, it was about how people have become so dependent on technology.  Some things I found interesting about this video was that many people with very important jobs such as train, taxi, plane, and bus drivers often text while driving.  I also found it interesting although not surprising that that most people spend up to 8-12 hours a day on the internet.  Something I agreed with about this video was that smart phones are not serving its purpose.  They were made to help you multitask but they are actually taking time away from our lives, and making us feel we can do things like text and drive when we aren't capable of doing so.

Dark Web

Another video we watched was on the Dark Web. It discussed how the internet can be used for bad reasons. Some things I found very interesting about this video was how much the internet changed over the years. I thought making a house you can program to do everything for you would be a very convenient  way of living. But like everything about the internet, there is also a downside to doing this. In order to set up that kind of house you would need to give that company all of your personal information and trust them not to misuse it.  A good point they made in the video was, "Do people want privacy or do people want new technology"? In my opinion more people would pick technology because they've grown to believe that they can't live without it. I also found it surprising the amount of control technology has over people, that some people would rather be on the internet than doing anything else.

Privacy on The Internet

I think this graphic novel gave everybody a lot to think about.  It had many examples of how posting things on the internet can go wrong, and how you should think about the consequences  before you post something on the internet.  Something I found was a good change about this graphic novel was that it had a cell phone giving advice, usually technology is the is the problem.  One thing I think is very important when using technology is to put a privacy setting on. I think that is very important because you don't want everyone seeing your private information.

Everyday Privacy

The article I just read had a lot of good points.  Some things I already knew about this topic was, when going shopping the the employees often ask for your personal information, shops and stores can track where you go and how often you go there, and that your credit card account cant be tracked or hacked.  During the article I realized that every upside to the internet there is a bad downside effective, such as, you could use your cell phone to take pictures of fun memories but they could also be tracked by strangers.  Something that surprised me in this article was that when you send a text even after it is deleted it leaves a "print" and can be still be accessible and or tracked.

  Cyber bullying

Some roles people play in bullying situations are; by-stander, who doesn't do anything just stands by and watches. The bully, the person doing the harassing over the internet or sometimes face to face.  The victim, the person being harassed and hurt by the people around him/her. Also the up-stander, the person who stands up for the victim and puts a stop to it. Cyber bullying can escalate more and more every time you don't address the problem right away. Some reasons why cyber bullying is most of the time the worst type of bullying , is because many people can comment and get into the fight as well. People see the fight online and often take sides and start to become active in that fight.  It is always a better choice to be a up-stander rather than a by-stander because you should make the right choice and don't let the victim suffer.  It only takes one up-stander to deescalate the situation.  They can take the attention away from the bully, show the by-standers it isn't funny to be mean, and prove the victim doesn't deserve to be abused and harassed.  It only takes one person to help out in a situation like bullying.

Journal Entry #4

This week in class our assignment was to create a slide show presentation on Google Slides.  The topic I chose my presentation to be on was "Revolutionizing Medical Tech with Dollar-Store Devices".  Using Google Slides was a very easy and efficient way to get this project done.  My topic was a very interesting one to explore.  It was about a man, Jose Gomez-Marquez, who invented a new way to make Medical Technology less expensive to experiment with.  Using inexpensive items to make a model of technology that usually costs $100,00 is a good way to give that technology to low income communities in need.  Many hospitals all around the world can't afford high priced, but needed medical technology, so if it were made by Dollar-Store devices it would be worth less money.

The World wide Web, Web 2.0 and Cloud Computing

The first video I watched on Carterspace was about Cloud Computing. In this video it was about how a service called Cloud Computing helped a women with her business.  The operation needed to have transportation to make it more successful, and in doing so Lucy used Cloud Computing to improve her business in that way.  By using Cloud Computing it made the company more convenient to work with, and it made Lucy's job a lot easier to do.   When you put something up in the cloud it makes it easier for people with very successful businesses to focus on one thing at a time, while "the cloud" takes care of another thing.  The second video I watched on Cloud Computing was about putting a video/picture up in the cloud so that you can never misplace it.  When you put anything on the internet it goes straight to the cloud, always being accessible.  The next video I watched was called Web 2.0, it explained  how websites do all the work for us. People are the ones running the computer and telling it which website to go on but the machine is actually us.  It also talks about how the internet is not just linking information it is linking people.

Photography Techniques

The first video we watched on camera techniques is "The Rule of  Thirds", and it described how important positioning the main object is.  Most of the time when taking a picture, most people  think that it is necessary to have the main subject/object in the center of the picture, but that is not always the best thing to do.  When you position the object so it is still clearly seen but not dead center it still gives it that eye catching look.  The next video we watched  was called "Fill the Frame", which described how the distance of the shot makes the photo more pleasing to the eye.  This technique is mostly used for capturing an action shot but still getting all the detail.  Another technique we viewed  was "Framing".  This technique is how to position the camera so that the subject is in between two objects, making it become framed.  This technique enhances the look of the photo.  The fourth video we watched as a class was on "Point  of View".  This technique describes how to make the object stand out from different angles.  Its also about how to position the photo correctly when trying to provide a specific message to the viewers.  The final video we watched was "Level Horizon", this is another  technique that is all about positioning.  You have to level your camera to give the picture the specific look you are trying to portray.  Leveling is an important part in making your photo look better. I learned a lot of new and important techniques.

Journal Entry #1

In class last week we worked on getting our netbooks set up, and our Google accounts up and running.  Which I found kind of difficult because creating a Google account was new to me.  It took me a few days and required a lot of help but I finally got it.  One of my main accomplishments of the week would have to be the role play activity we all did in groups.  It was a success because everyone in my group worked hard at the skit and put forth a equal effort.  My responsibility for the group was to be the author of the script and the narrator, which I found very simple because I was familiar with it.  Something I found interesting last week was the documentaries we watched on technology.  I thought they were very interesting because I learned a lot of new material on technology that I wasn't familiar with before.
